Common Sense

— Posted by John (February 13, 2006 at 5:13 pm)

Nearly 20% of women who have abortions are teenagers.

Thousands of preventable abortions are performed on girls under the age of 18 every year.

Why do these abortions happen?

They happen because the states where these abortions are performed don’t have parental notification laws — laws that require abortion clinics to notify the parents of a minor teen to know that she is planning to have an abortion.

Over half the states currently have parental notification or consent laws in effect. Florida is the latest state to serve as a battleground over these laws.

The people of Florida voted last year to pass a parental notification law by nearly a 2-to-1 margin — meaning that the measure was supported even by many people who think abortion should remain legal.

These laws are simply a matter of common sense. For one, they reduce the number of abortions among teens, which everyone can agree is a good thing.

They also make sense because parents have a right to know when their minor child undergoes a major medical procedure.

Fewer babies killed by abortion, and fewer teenage girls spared from the harmful effects of abortion. Who could object to that?

Planned Parenthood, that’s who.

This isn’t surprising, considering that they’re the leading abortion provider in America. Fewer abortions means that they lose business.

Thankfully, a federal judge ruled against Planned Parenthood’s challenge to Florida’s parental notification law last week.

This is great news not only for the people of Florida, but for pro-lifers who are working hard to pass parental notification laws in other states as well.

It’s these types of small victories that will eventually add up to the overturning of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.

It is a shame that we live in a world were the parents are not taking on the responsible act of teaching their children about life. One aspect of life is procreation and the aspect of having children. All parents need to teach their children male and female about the sanctity of life and when sex is permissible . Never out side the confines of marrige should young people have sex, the risks are to great to the person and the unwanted result could wind up causing them to commit murder. Pretty bad things happen when you let your feelings rule instead of the mind. As far as the ones who want control over their bodies , they have it, all they have to do is (prevent) and they can go on their merry way. The abortion clinics I equate them to medievil torture and dungeons where the killing and the torture take place. To bad there is so much money made killing our future .

    Kenneth,

You’re right — it is a shame when parents don’t take the responsibility of teaching their children about sexual morality.

It seems to me that parents in the baby boom generation largely dropped the ball when it came to teaching their kids about sex, and placed way too much confidence in schools to do their job for them.

It also seems to me, though, that more and more younger parents (those in their 20s and early 30s) are realizing that their parents’ generation didn’t do a very good job in this area, and that these younger parents — my wife and I fall into this category — are committed to doing a better job of instilling the virtues of modesty, purity, and chastity in our children.
