Pro-Life & Pro-Environment

— Posted by Annie (February 23, 2006 at 11:38 am)

I happen to be one of those pro-lifers who also likes mother earth. Now, I don’t worship her, I’ve chosen God instead, but I don’t see why the two have to be in conflict. It seems like if the liberals like it, it must be bad. Since liberals tend to be into protecting the environment, protecting the environment is seen as bad. But I disagree. Shouldn’t we respect and care for all life?

Actually, I found it quite interesting that Katelyn Sills (Stand Up and Speak Out) and her family are both Republicans and organic farmers. Now, I’m not sure why they farm organically, but it doesn’t really matter. Whatever the reason is, it’s better for the environment. And I don’t see any conflict there. In fact I found that point in her bio to be admirable.

Humans are at the top of the pyramid of life, but I think God wants us to care for the rest of his creation. It just makes sense – to me anyway.

    Annie,

Good point — the desire to protect the environment makes sense, especially since we’re called to be responsible stewards of God’s creation.

You’re touching upon a growing movement called the “Crunchy Conservatives” (or simply “Crunchy Cons”). In fact, there’s a blog by this very name:

This idea you mentioned that “if liberals like it it must be bad” also has a converse, which is “if liberals are against it it must be good”. This thinking was used to support Alito’s confirmation as Supreme Court Judge. I heard it over and over again from pro-lifers, including from some at Allen County Right To Life after Alito was confirmed. That NARAL and others opposition to Alito was evidence that Alito was a good choice as judge and would vote to overturn Roe v Wade and uphold pro-life law.

And this was their best reason for supporting Alito, since they admitted that they had not checked out how Alito decided on pro-life cases, some of which were extremist pro-abortion decisions.

There’s a lot of bad “science” that is used to back up the claim that people are the reason why “global warming” is occuring. Get the facts on the science and insight on the political motivations conerning Global Warming here http://www.globalwarming.org

That book by Dreher has sparked new interest in true conservatism–what an unfortunate name though (”cruncy con”!?!)–and that it is not paradoxical at all to be socially conservative and at the same time good stewards of the earth. Men like Edmund Burke, Richard Weaver and Russell Kirk have understood this for quite a while. The Catholic Church knows a thing or two about it too :)

As a city dweller, I’m probably the only one on my block that composts and attends latin mass. Go figure.

I’m into organic food and recently received a magazine called ACRES. At their conference last year, they had an entire session on the detrimental effects of toxins from the Pill on our environment. Apparently hormones from the pill are leaking into our water ways and reeking havoc on wild life, i.e., male fish with ovaries. Just another sign that the pill is no good. (Another something the Catholic Church has known all along!).

[…] It seems everyone is all about going “green” these days ever since Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize. I’m all into taking care of the environment. I recycle and other such things. After all, we are called by God to be good stewards of the earth. I even wrote a post about it a few years ago. […]
