Who’s Afraid of a Pro-Life Message?

— Posted by John (March 23, 2006 at 4:55 pm)

Repeatedly vandalized bench

It’s not the first time this graffiti tagged bench in Rockford, IL has been vandalized.

It’s the tenth time. In three weeks.

Apparently, someone in Rockford doesn’t believe women deserve better than abortion, for on one occasion, the message “Women deserve better than abortion” was scratched off.

Another time, a picture of a baby attached to an ad was stolen. You know, because baby pictures are too offensive to be displayed in public.

Rockford pro-lifer Kevin Rilott, a friend of Generations for Life, commented on the vandalism:

“It’s just affecting someone and made them very angry,” he said. “We know it’s a controversial issue, but if we can’t peacefully express our opinion, it’s not what our county is about.”

Rilott indicated the group has contracted advertising on the bus bench through November and will keep on putting up new slogans when older ones are defaced.

Hats off to Kevin and his fellow pro-lifers for their resilience.

As we have for the past three years, we will be visiting Rockford again on our annual Face the Truth Tour this coming July.

It will be interesting to see if the bench-defacing pro-aborts will show up to counter-demonstrate.

They’re all for “tolerance” and “diversity” as long as you’re exactly like them.

I’m amazed that things like this actually happen over there. I’ve heard of the pro-life marches and demonstrations which anti-life groups will meet with their own marches and demonstrations which tend to become a bit violent.

Then I read about the Harvard Right to Life posters that were torn down by people who don’t like the posters.

I truly hope conflicts of this kind don’t reach my country. Here I think there are less people who actually advocate abortion or see it as a “right”; if there are many people who have those beliefs here, they are generally not outspoken about it.

You raise an interesting point. Both inside and outside the US, I’m sure that a significant majority of people are unaware of such actions on the part of pro-aborts due to the fact that such incidents aren’t reported in the mainstream media.

Human Life International has an entire website called, fittingly enough, “Abortion Violence” that documents incidents of violence committed by pro-abortion individuals.

Of course, the Rockford bench incident wasn’t an incident of actual violence, but the unhinged behavior behind it is not entirely dissimilar from that which motivates pro-aborts who resort to violence.

That website is a great resource! I’m still reading the part about media bias and am learning a lot. It’s really appalling, too, to know how many pro-abortion activists would actually make up such lies about pro-life people.

Btw, Happy Day of the Unborn to you and everyone at Generations for Life, John! Do you have any special activities planned to celebrate the day? We’ve only started having March 25 as Day of the Unborn in my country in 2004, when the President issued a Proclamation designating the day to be dedicated to the unborn.

A Chicago-area Knights of Columbus chapter has a tradition of having a Mass and Eucharistic procession in the surrounding neighborhood every year on the Solemnity of the Annunciation, so we promoted that locally.
