Shooting Themselves in the Foot

— Posted by John (April 19, 2006 at 11:05 am)

By now, you’ve probably heard about the professor who led her students in vandalizing a pro-life display at Northern Kentucky University.

The act of destroying such displays, which consist of white wooden crosses that symbolize victims of abortion, is nothing new. Eight years ago, when Annie and I were active in the pro-life club at Loyola, our wooden crosses — set up with permission, and with the help of university employees — were likewise trashed. Along with breaking crosses and ripping up signs, vandals also saw fit to throw in a few — surprise! — coat hangers in the midst of the display.

So, when I first heard about the vandalism at Northern Kentucky, I wasn’t entirely surprised. Even after finding out that a professor had actively encouraged her students to join her in trashing the pro-life display, I wasn’t shocked. Maybe I’m being too cynical, but this is what I’ve come to expect from pro-aborts. And what segment of the population is more virulently pro-abortion than college professors?

To her credit, however, the vandalizing professor, Dr. Sally Jacobson, has issued an apology — a smart move on her part considering that a few days ago she said she didn’t see anything wrong with what she had done. She also noted in an interview with a local TV station that she hoped her actions had not damaged the college’s reputation.

I wonder how the unfortunate souls in Northern Kentucky’s PR department are doing right about now. Or the school’s recruiters: this incident comes right in the middle of decision time for high school seniors. If I were a senior, and if I had been considering Northern Kentucky, last week’s idiocy would have made my short list even shorter.

For us as pro-lifers, let’s keep these displays coming. Many of them will probably be vandalized, but even so, this doesn’t hurt our cause in the long run. On the other hand, pro-abortion vandalism does hurt the perpetrators’ cause, for as long as pro-aborts keep behaving like a brood of spoiled children, public support for abortion will continue to drop.

Kudos to the smart Loyola students for doing that as well… When do you ever put up crosses for the children in Iraq or Africa has ever lost their lives.. You know the ones that are like full-grown and out of their mom’s belly?

Uhhhh, Lauren, because its a display to honor children who have lost their lives through abortion. If you would like to put up crosses for children who have died by other means, go for it. Hopefully the people on your campus have more respect for human life then the ones mentioned in the article.

    Lauren,

Have you put up crosses at Loyola for the children of Iraq? And how can you congratulate someone for violence? What we did at Loyola was peaceful and respectful and it was immature (not thoughtful) students who detroyed our display.

You’re mentality worries me. I hope you wouldn’t resort to violence, but somthing tells me that you might.

Lauren, not every group can focus on every single issue. As someone who has been involved in many major issues (veganism/animal rights, anti-sweatshop, Ralph Nader’s campaign in 2004, anti-death penalty, environmental actions, anti-police brutality, anti-racist actions, poverty issues….as well as having been involved in two organizations and one meeting that were under federal surveillance in 2004-2005), and considered more of a progressive than most (at least, until they find out I’m pro-life), I see it as more hypocritcal for someone who claims to be for life in Iraq, in the slums, etc to NOT oppose abortion, than it is for someone who opposes abortion to not oppose the rest. The very fact that abortion is direct violence inflicted upon the most innocent and vulnerable of all humanity is cause for people to make it a priority.

The Story: An Indiana mother recently accompanied her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend to one of Indiana’s Planned Parenthood clinics, but they unwittingly walked into a “crisis pregnancy center” run by an anti-abortion group — one that shared a parking lot with the real Planned Parenthood clinic, and was designed expressly to lure our patients and deceive them.

The group took down the girl’s confidential personal information and told her to come back for her appointment, which they said would be in their “other office” (the real Planned Parenthood office nearby). When she arrived for her appointment, not only did the Planned Parenthood staff have no record of her, but the police were there — the “crisis pregnancy center” had called them, claiming that a minor was being forced to have an abortion against her will.

The “crisis pregnancy center” staff then proceeded to wage a campaign of intimidation and harassment over the following days, showing up at the girl’s home and calling her father’s workplace. Our clinic director reports that she was “scared to death to leave her house.” They even went to her school and urged classmates to pressure her not to have an abortion.

This cruel and fraudulent behavior shows exactly what’s behind the proliferation of these centers. That’s why this new bill is so important: it would make it illegal for any entity to advertise abortion services if it does not provide such services.

In a typical move, Lauren claims the cross display was evil and deserving of vandalism because pro-lifers are hypocrites (they didn’t do the same demonstration for every other oppressed group in the world). This is a very basic and obvious fallacy that “smart Loyola students” ought to be able to see through.

Lauren, if neo-Nazi vandals were to break into the Holocaust Museum in DC and trash it, would you consider that “funny”? It would seem so, in examining what seems to tickle your funny bone in message 10.

are you equating the pro-choice movement with Nazis? My best friend who is Jewish would probably ridicule you to no end for that statement.

That’s too bad. It makes them look bad. They had no right. Truly, they had no right. Freedom of Speech applies to everyone, not just those we agree with. They would have been within their rights to set up a display that showed their side of the issue, but not to destroy what they disagreed with. I am personally ashamed of what they have done, and am sorry that it is anyway attached to the freedom for women that must be protected.
