Lauren,
Where exactly in our Constitution is the right to pray denied to anyone at anytime?

Can you be more specific? I made more than one statement about which you could have called me wrong, and none of them stand out to me.

Nowhere in my comment do I touch on Constitutional law, either, so your statement leaves me quite perplexed.

Perhaps you are just reading in what you want to read?

The article does not say she was proselytizing. She wanted to thank her god for her success. Her God is Jesus of Nazareth. I would bet they wouldn't cut off a Muslim student thanking Allah, or a Native American student thanking a spirit guide. They definitely would not stop a student who believed their success was due to their parents, their teachers, and/or their hard work from acknowledging and praising these sources.

Lauren says "It’s a solemn occasion and is not intended to elevate this girl’s soapbox. The girl ahs the right to say anything she wants, just not at the behest of the school’s microphones."

Solemn occasion? Says who?

The school's microphones? Who or what is the school?

As president of my class in high school, and the speaker of the commencement address it is not my place nor was it that girl's to prostelytize, whether it be religion, my political beliefs or etc. It's a solemn occasion and is not intended to elevate this girl's soapbox.
Lucy,

Thanks for the link to FIRE's website; I hadn't heard of them before.

The article quotes Jay Sekulow of the American Center of Law & Justice; I suspect that if she's planning to sue--and I'm sure she is--they will represent her.

It's a shame this happened -- and you wonder why no one wants to send their kids to public schools anymore.

I always tell those who want God out of the public schools this..

As long as teachers continue to give tests in the public schools; THERE WILL ALWAYS BE PRAYER IN SCHOOL!

I think they primarily deal with the College level. They still might be a good source for options available to her. I don't know if anybody knows the young lady who was the victim. Here, I mean. Obviously someone knows her.

There is a group called Fire that works with violations of students rights to free speech. She should contact them. There is nothing that says that students cannot speak of religion. The problem is that in Public Schools employees are essentially Government workers, government can't impose or interfere with the students right to speak. She was obviously not a staff member, making it so that she could have reasonably given a sermon.
