Does Victoria Still Have A Secret?

— Posted by Annie (December 18, 2006 at 2:41 pm)

I enjoyed this post on Modestly Yours. I have taken to calling Victoria’s Secrect, Victoria’s Brothel. I really liked the final comment (at least it was the final comment last I looked). It nicely summed it all up.

yes, it does seem that Victoria’s been sharing her secret. I like how Mary Kay explained it to her daughter, they’re giving their candy away.

Victoria’s Secret actually has a really cute collection called “PINK”. It’s only advertised in their catalougue, but it has a milder (less “sexy”), cute version of panties and bras and camis and pajamas and things. Instead of the “look at me, I’m so seductive” poses, the women are usually pictured in their bedrooms, in their homes, etc… just laughing or smiling or what have you. It’s unfortunate that all their attire isn’t advertised like this.

Personally, I opt to shop at Gap Body for my under-things; it has far more comfortable stuff and I don’t think I’ve ever seen any ads for Gap undies before…

I like the idea of VS, a place where you can buy moderately priced underwear and lingerie, however, I don’t approve of them advertising their more provocative garments in public; it’s uncomfortable walking past a store where there’s a big image of a woman dressed in a thong and a push-up bra, those should be left in their catalogues where a person can chose to view them or not

I also have a problem with their line that markets lingerie type products to teenagers. No teenager needs sexy underwear

    Christine,

When I was about ten or eleven years old, I wanted to switch from plain white hanes underwear to these flowery ones. They were a lot cuter and I guess I just wanted something different, I don’t remember. My mom told me I didn’t need cute underwear because no one was going to be looking at my underwear.

Sometimes it’s just nice to feel good in what you’re wearing–even if you’re the only one who is going to see it. I agree that they have some pretty risque stuff that shouldn’t be geared toward teens, but at the same time, where do we draw the line? As long as people aren’t seeing it, what difference does it make what we wear under our clothes?

Perhaps I should just wear a potato sack all day long. Seriously it’s lingerie! Who cares!?

    Well Lauren,

That depends on what you are wearing UNDER the potato sack and whether or not you bought the potato sack from Victoria’s Secret…

    The author says:
But with women’s lingerie being the product Victoria’s Secret sells, how might we suggest an alternative advertising technique? More specifically, is there a modest way to advertise underwear and lingerie? With modesty including not only physical presentation, but also attitude and behavior, is the problem more the sexy and provocative attitudes assumed by Victoria’s Secret models, or is it the mere presentation of the lingerie itself?

VS sells less provacative lingerie that is appealing to women such as comfy flannel pajamas, nighties, and even more comfortable underwear. They can use these as the focus of their cisual campaigns without being trashy, and leave the trashier stuff for people to seek out inside. But the fact is, VS does not want to focus simply on selling comfortable pajamas to women or their significant others, the focus on exploiting sexuality.

After listening to the “Contraception is not the answer” CDs, I am thinking modern women NEED sexy immodest dress because their sex pheromones are all messed up. Instead of giving off the I-am-desirable-pheromones, they give off I-am-pregnant-already pheromones. The later being handy if you are actually pregnant and have a husband, but practically useless when looking for one. If women on the pill did not have seductive clothing, I am not very sure they would be able to get any men.

As for Victoria’s Secret. I agree and think their ads are definitely NOT FOR CHILDREN and should be removed from ALL public medium.

Something I recently discovered through a classmate was an internet website that links videos from YouTube that are pretty raunchy. The more unfortunate fact, is that a lot of the girls on this site look like they are under 18, and some look as young as 9 or ten.

I discovered one particular video that was especially jaw-dropping (and not in a good way) which features four girls that look to be around 15, dancing around (in a “sexy” manner) in their bras and panties. To make matters worse, they were stuffing dollar bills in their bras!! I won’t link it, for obvious reasons, but I for one cannot believe that parents would let this happen. YouTube’s only rule seems to be, there cannot be direct nudity or sexual content in the videos posted there.

I can’t imagine what these girls’ mothers would say. =(

Do you have a some sort of reference for this statement?

Here is one for my point of view:

I got into an argument with an friend about this once. He thought I was full of baloney. The way I got him to concede was to ask his wife if women’s cycles sync up with each other when they spend a lot of time together. She concurred, and he admitted he ever heard of it before.

I always heard that women who live together may fall in sync with each other because what you eat, how much you exercise, how much sleep you get, and stress all factor in when it comes to your menstrual cycle, and that people living together were likely to eat the same meals, exercise together, have similar sleep schedules, etc… but I dunno.

    CC,

I wasn’t refering to the prints so much as the “cut” of the underwear, which is very low rise and some even thongs and see-through lace, which are in their “Pink” collection targeted at young women and girls

I guess I haven’t shopped their lately, I definitely didn’t remember that. But again, if no one else is going to see them, why does it matter what kind of panties a girl wants to ear? A lot of girls wear thongs because panty-lines are unattractive, and I know when I was in dance you either wore a thong or didn’t wear underwear at all because it would show underneath your leotard.

I think what matters is what you’re doing in your underwear, not what the underwear looks like.
