New York Middle School Sued Over Denying Pro-Life Abortion Fliers

Albany, NY (LifeNews.com) — A New York middle school is the subject of a lawsuit from a pro-life firm after it barred a student from expressing his pro-life views. The unnamed student wanted to participate in the national Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity, where students stay silent during the day to speak up for unborn children and hand out fliers about abortion.

On October 24, Gowana Middle School’s principal told the student to turn his pro-life T-shirt inside out and cease the distribution of pro-life fliers. She allowed the student to remain silent, but prohibited him from telling anyone why, and forced him to remove a piece of red tape from his mouth that read “Life.”

Here’s the most outrageous part:

In a school-wide announcement, the principal demanded that students who received a flier forfeit them to school officials.

The principal allegedly said “students shouldn’t be thinking about issues like that at your age” though school officials have previously allowed students to engage in free expression on other controversial social issues.

One of the student’s attorneys, Tom Marcelle, commented:

If 13-year-olds are old enough to participate in sexual education courses, they are certainly old enough to talk about issues such as abortion.

If school officials come to their senses, they’ll want to settle this lawsuit as soon as possible.

Forget about “old enough to participate in sexual education courses”…How about old enough to participate in sexual intercourse and old enough to have legal abortions without parental consent.

I told you the world was nuts!

The youngest people in the world have to deal with abortion everyday, they don’t get the chance to think about it.

    Very true Rosie,
When I was that age I never thought of abortion as anything more then, say, having a cavity taken out, since that’s basically how we were taught it in sex Ed: “If you get pregnant, you can go to a Planned Parenthood to talk about your options” is how I was taught in my 7th grade sex-ed course in Canada.
No one tells you about what abortion does to you, spiritually and emotionally. And you’re especially not taught to give the unborn any sense of humanity

Freedom of Expression in Public Schools…

Public schools are great from a liberal perspective. We all pay for them, but we all don’t have the right to express ourselves. Case in point:
