I wonder if he was absent the day the class learned that pride is the deadliest of sins.

Is Hannity aware that the only way to deal with corruption in the church (or anywhere) is to start on a deeply personal level? I applaud Fr. Tom for not judging Hannity as a person and calling him to repentance. Heck…I’m not even Catholic. Isn’t the point of Jesus’ sacrifice that we can have a personal relationship with Him? Doesn’t this imply that our personal life is the most important issue to take care of? Hannity yells, “Judge not, Father!” but continues to judge the church as a whole. If he has such severe issues with the church, why does he remain a member?
St. Seraphim of Sarov, an Orthodox saint, said, “Acquire the Holy Spirit, and thousands around you will be saved.” I think this is important to remember and very easy to forget.

For many years the world has paid close attention to the foundation that bears your name. No one faults you or your husband for funding excellent programs to keep kids in school and assisting with the advancement of healthcare for the Third World, but the real concern of people of faith has been how the Gateses will use their money when it comes to fighting AIDS, something your husband has called “Public Enemy #1.”
If there had been any doubt about it up to this point, your recent address to the 16th World Conference on AIDS in Toronto settled that question. You are using your high-profile position and extreme wealth to push condoms as a solution to this deadly disease, and that, quite frankly, is irresponsible.

We have tons of those types in the clergy already. I would advise you to drink deeply of the wisdom of the Number Two man at our Headquarters who has in no uncertain terms told all of us that high profile dissenters are a scourge and a danger to souls.
This is why I really like Fr. Tom. He tells it like it is!

Dear Father Jonathan,
Your letter to Sean Hannity indicates that you did not know that I asked to speak to him in private about this matter in 2004 otherwise you may have tempered your remarks about my supposed lack of charity in dealing with a high profile Catholic who dissents from clearly-defined and reiterated Church teachings. [See “Fr. Euteneuer asks to meet with Hannity about birth control” on sidebar.] You also seemed to be unaware of the fact that Sean was the one who invited me on his program and who then promptly “[threw] civility to the wind,” refused to display “cultivated intelligence” on the issues and jeopardized another person’s “reputation and dignity.” May I also point out that you did not employ with me the same standard of “fraternal correction” that you expected me to employ with Mr. Hannity. I at least made the attempt to speak to him about this issue in private without success; you, in contrast, went immediately to the internet to take me to task. I do not intend to understand your motives; I can only evaluate what I see in your actions.
The question that comes to mind is an obvious one: if you are a Fox analyst on Catholic matters, wouldn’t you have been the one to have had those “private conversations” on birth control with Mr. Hannity? How about discussions on his abortion exceptions? When you told Sean “in person” that you “disagreed with him,” was it on the issue of birth control? If you had done that, I applaud you, but your powers of persuasion may need a little honing—Sean has only gotten more vocal on this issue over time. If you did not speak to him about his public dissent, then I ask you, “Why?” While we are on the subject, have you also analyzed and disagreed with Bill O’Reilly’s perfectly horrible disdain for the Holy Father and the Church that you represent?
The church sex abuse scandal was not just about homosexual and predatory priests. It was about clerical negligence and silence on issues that not only affect people’s souls but also ruin people’s lives. It is highly unusual that you or anyone else would want a priest to be silent on issues that affect the salvation of souls. We used to recognize “admonishing the sinner” as one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy, and I consider my admonishment of Mr. Hannity to have been done in that spirit. I might also add that in doing so I have fulfilled my duty as a priest which is a requirement for my salvation.

The whole blogosphere is talking about this issue now during the season of lent when we are all supposed to repent.
If this issue just gets one more person to take a second look at their soul and go to confession during lent, then it was well worth it.
I think Fr. E’s original intent with the interview was to get this issue into the blogosphere’s!

Words of wisdom, indeed.
A Catholic saint, St. John Vianney — the patron saint of diocesan priests, of which Fr. Euteneuer is one — said something similar: “A priest goes to heaven or a priest goes to hell, and a thousand souls follow behind him.”

Exactly, a friend of mine is getting confirmed this May. It is so neat to see how the chain keeps growing. She recently took a co-worker to church with her, it may not be a big deal to some but at least she planted a seed in the other persons mind where the faith is concerned. It is very interesting to see how much her own life is changing for the better also, she just started to date a really nice catholic guy, whereas before her taste in men was somewhat lacking. Interestingly enough she says that she noticed that her taste in men changed when she went off the pill. Hmm…

Asking a priest whether they’d prefer women having abortions or taking birthcontrol is like asking someone if they’d rather get stabbed or shot to death.
Both are morally wrong in the Catholic faith so that was a really unfair question.
In fact, the whole interview was unfair since this guy wouldn’t even let the priest get in a word. It seems he just wanted him to appear on his show so he could yell at him about random anti-Church stuff
