Chastity in Country Music?

— Posted by Victoria (June 16, 2011 at 11:14 am)

I’ll be honest. I’m a big country music fan. In an age of techno, digitally mastered music, there is just something about country that feels so authentic. So, when I’m driving around, I’m often tuned into our local country music radio.

Sometimes I will have to switch the station because, well, some of the songs can get…er…raunchy. And honestly, I just don’t want listen to it. So when I recently heard a new song released by the band Lady Antebellum, I immediately fell in love with it. Because it seems to promote a message of chastity. Check it out:

Lyin’ here with you so close to me
It’s hard to fight these feelings when it feels so hard to breathe
Caught up in this moment
Caught up in your smile

I’ve never opened up to anyone
So hard to hold back when I’m holding you in my arms
We don’t need to rush this
Let’s just take this slow

Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch in the fire burning so bright
And I don’t want to mess this thing up
I don’t want to push too far

Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I’ve been waiting for my whole life
So baby I’m alright, with just a kiss goodnight

It’s not a perfect chastity message, but it sure seems to point in that direction. Hmmm…what does the next verse say?

I know that if we give this a little time
It will only bring us closer to the love we wanna find

It’s never felt so real, no it’s never felt so right

Now, I don’t know if it was the band’s intention to have a chastity message in their song. And, though the song speaks of waiting, they don’t actually mention marriage. Listening to it through a Christian lens, it’s pretty neat to think of it in that way. In an age of songs (and movies and books and lifestyles…) where the very idea of waiting to share an intimate part of love is scorned at best and often forgotten completely, this is a rather refreshing change.

No I don’t want to say goodnight
I know it’s time to leave, but you’ll be in my dreams

Again, it’s not a perfect chastity message. And posting this after Kara’s great article about saving kissing until marriage, this falls a little short of the mark. But for a popular band in secular music, I personally think it is pretty neat. The next time it comes on the radio, I know I won’t have to change the station.

Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch in the fire burning so bright
And I don’t want to mess this thing up
I don’t want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I’ve been waiting for my whole life
So baby I’m alright, oh, let’s do this right, with just a kiss goodnight
With a kiss goodnight
Kiss goodnight

I always knew I loved country music.

God bless!

Yeah, good reflection on the song. I’ve been thinking about the song myself. It isn’t perfect, as you said, but it’s a step in the right direction. It shows how even in popular culture, people want something “more” eventually than just a casual relationship all the time. :)
